Dear Parents and Boosters,
Due to the recent budget cuts the Chino Valley Unified School District is proposing drastic cuts
to staffing and services including music education. As I have stated before, I am not a resident
of your city so I will not tell you what to do, but as I have been here for many years I think I
understand the expectations of the community so will offer information that I feel is important.
Please consider this and information from other sources to make decisions based on the needs of
your family and community. I also suggest that you confirm all of the information offered the
facts can be fluid and constantly changing.
This being said, the school board votes this Thursday, Jan. 20th 7pm @ Woodcrest JHS on these
proposed cuts:
2011-2012
Proposed Budget Cuts to Music:
1. Eliminate general music grades 1st –
6th.
2. Eliminate all elementary choirs.
3. Eliminate (lay-off) 6 music teachers
based only on seniority.
4. Restructure elementary music to only
offer 5th & 6th grade band.
5. Provide only 4 band teachers for 22
elementary schools.
6. The staffing of vacated junior and
senior high school music programs
(due to lay-offs) would be
determined by district seniority
regardless of current grades or
disciplines taught (K-12).
Schools adversely affected by these
proposed cuts:
ALL 22 Elementary Schools
2 Jr. High Schools
2 High Schools
2012-2013
Proposed Budget Cuts to Music:
1. Eliminate all Elementary Music.
2. Eliminate 4 more of the 16 remaining
music teachers again based seniority.
3. The staffing of vacated junior and
senior high school music programs
(due to lay-offs) would be determined
by district seniority regardless of
current grades or disciplines taught (K-
12).
Schools adversely affected by these proposed
cuts:
ALL 22 Elementary Schools
More secondary music programs
Other Points:
Every student 2nd grade-4th grade district-wide currently receives musical education from our 11
elementary music teachers; and every 5th-6th grader is provided opportunity for band and choir in
alignment with California State Standards. Classroom-teachers are not trained to teach music.
The district recognizes that music is proven to develop mathematical and reasoning skills; in
doing so, music boosts students’ academic achievement!
Property values are directly affected by the quality of education provided by the local school
system. The affect is positive when quality enrichments (such as music that develops math and
reasoning skills) boosts academic achievement and are consistently supported. This also attracts
more high-achievers to the area. Or the affect can be negative when drastic cuts are made,
resources eliminated, and staffing becomes a revolving door creating a climate of chaos and
uncertainty.
Families may leave the district to place their children in schools/districts that provide fine arts
music programs. With growing options including: other school districts, private schools, charter
schools, and local Performing Arts High Schools, families will no longer stay in a district that
proposes to eliminate foundations of academic enrichment, radical staffing changes, and creates
uncertainty with threats to cut fine arts music programs year after year. This will affect the
Average Daily Attendance monies the district receives from the state. There’s no need to lose
more students to charter and private schools through our lack of providing/funding a wellrounded
education to our Chino Valley students.
If you would like to contact you’re School Board Members with your views, their information
follows. If you choose to speak at the board meeting, please stay positive and only speak to
support programs. I would appreciate it if you would contact me so I know what to expect.
Musically yours,
Mark Stone
